Quebec City is a magical place, no matter the season… but it’s particularly special in winter. You can trust me on that one. I just got back from my fourth trip to Quebec City and have now experienced it in all seasons! We wondered at the flutterings of the season’s first snowfall, bathed outdoors in a Nordic spa, and cuddled up inside with hot mulled cider. As I discovered, there are plenty of things to do in Quebec City in winter.
This was my fourth visit to Quebec City, a place that has long had a special spot in my heart. How can I describe Quebec City to you? At the top of a steep hill, you find yourself in a pocket of fairytale French architecture, surrounded by cobbled streets and castles. But are there gluten free Quebec City options, or is this a fairytale you’ll go hungry in?
If you’re gluten free, you need to get to Vancouver, Canada stat. The gluten free Vancouver scene is on fire. (And to convince your non-gluten free travel companions, just give them promises of gorgeous sunsets overlooking the city skyline, iconic suspension bridges, perfectly roasted coffee, and mountains within 30 minutes of the city center…. ahhh, take me back to Vancouver!).
People flock to Stratford, Ontario throughout the summer and autumn for the annual Stratford Theater Festival. And well they should, for this world-famous theater festival has starred the likes of Maggie Smith and the current season’s Martha Henry. The Stratford Festival is unparalleled when it comes to artistic vision. Even so, though… there are so many more things to do in Stratford Ontario Canada than just the festival! My recent trip to Stratford was my fourth, yet it was the first that I actually experienced Stratford to its full extent.
I was perusing hotels in Stratford Ontario for my recent mother-daughter road trip when I realized… of all the times I’ve been to Stratford, I’d never stayed overnight. Stratford Ontario is named after the UK’s Stratford-upon-Avon, and is similarly besotted with Shakespeare, to the point that it hosts its own world famous Shakespeare festival. In fact, it is practically a rite of passage for all those growing up in the vicinity (as I did in Michigan) to do a school field trip to the Shakespeare festival. But Stratford is most definitely worth more than a day trip, least of all for the many wonderful hotels in Stratford Ontario. One hotel, however, rises above the rest, and that is Forest Motel and Woodland Retreat.
When my Mom and I road tripped to Stratford Ontario, we were expecting to see great theatre (thanks to the world-famous Stratford Shakespeare Festival)… what we weren’t expecting was all the great food! Stratford Ontario is a small city but it has a big foodie scene. As always, I was on the hunt for gluten free restaurants, and the gluten free Stratford Ontario restaurants did not disappoint! We truly ate our way around the city. It wasn’t too hard to find gluten free restaurants, but luckily we got even more advice on gluten free Stratford Ontario restaurants from locals, courtesy of Visit Stratford.
I had a flying visit to Toronto on my way home from the Women in Travel Summit. After an 8-hour day road tripping from Quebec, I arrived to Toronto sticky, cramped. My dad was there to receive an award at a conference, but I had only 17 hours in the city before I had to hop on a Greyhound bus back to Michigan and cut the family road trip short. Due to, ya know, work. Besides just being exhausted from all the conferencing and driving and just wanting to stay in one place and CHILL, I think I also wanted to stay in Toronto because it’s… cool! As in, sunglasses emoji cool. It reminds me a bit of a Canadian Chicago. I only wish I had more time to explore, so I’m hoping I can make that happen soon…
Last weekend I was sipping a gin & tonic in Quebec City’s swankiest new bar, surrounded by 500 female travel influencers, and about 6,000 tiny sandwiches. I was at the opening party of the 2018 Women in Travel Summit! I not only attended my first ever travel blogging conference, but was able to score a free ticket. In this Women in Travel Summit review I’ll tell you all about what I learned, loved, and what I’ll change next time! I’ll also tell you how YOU can score a Women in Travel Summit free ticket!! (This is an exciting blog post I tell ya).
