Where to Find Gluten Free Key Lime Pie in Key West and the Florida Keys (2024)
On my recent trip to the Florida Keys, I made it my mission to find the best gluten free key lime pie in Key West and beyond.
I always love to try the local cuisine when I travel. In the Florida Keys, that obviously means Key Lime Pie. However, having celiac disease means I have to eat gluten free. That obviously creates a huge issue when the local delicacy features a gluten-y pie crust.
Luckily for me (and now you!) my mission succeeded! I found multiple places in the Florida Keys where you can get celiac-safe gluten free key lime pie. Read more about them all below!

Finding Gluten Free Key Lime Pie in Key West and the Florida Keys
One of my requirements for this gluten free key lime pie guide was that every location had to be celiac-safe. Personally, it is important to me to avoid cross contact with gluten, or I will get sick and ruin my vacation (not to mention the lasting autoimmune effects!).
Saying that, sometimes kitchen practices can change so I encourage you to always double check about the gluten free status when you visit.
If you do notice any changes from what I’ve written below, please leave me a comment! Together, we can keep this gluten free key lime pie in Key West guide as updated as possible.

Gluten Free Key Lime Pie in Key West
Ahh, Key West! I absolutely love this place, and this was my second time visiting. We stayed at the beautiful and quaint The Gardens Hotel right in the center of everything. This was an ideal base for my gluten free key lime pie mission! (You can read my full article on the best places to stay in the Florida Keys here!).
From what I found in Key West, there are two companies that offer a gluten free key lime pie “experience.”
What I mean by “experience” is that only one has actual pie, whereas the other has pie filling in a cup.
There’s a third business that used to offer gluten free key lime pie. However, they discontinued it, which goes to show that you shouldn’t always trust reviews you find on FMGF or elsewhere online. Read about all locations below!
Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe
Gluten free key lime pie? Yes.
Address: Kermit’s has two locations! 200 Elizabeth St, Key West, FL 33040 (we went here) and 335F Duval St, Key West, FL 33040.
Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe is my #1 top recommendation for gluten free key lime pie in Key West, and actually anywhere in the Florida Keys.
A local celiac recommended I visit, as Kermit’s is known for not only having the best key lime pie in Key West but also offering a celiac-safe gluten free version.
It’s all prepared in the same kitchen but they do take precautions to prevent cross contact. The pie crust itself is both gluten free and kosher, made from crushed gluten free cookies at their factory up in DeLand, Florida.
I was lucky enough on our visit to meet Kermit himself (and his pup Pirate, AKA Pi!). We chatted for a while about his journey creating his Key Lime Pie Shoppe and brand.
I’ve got to say, this gluten free key lime pie was absolutely delicious and I noticed a significant difference in flavor between it and the other gluten free key lime pies I tried across the Florida Keys.
I think this is down to a slightly more complex recipe that Kermit uses (he dubs it “grandma’s recipe” compared to “daughter’s recipe” – because daughters take short cuts, haha).
Either way, Kermit’s gluten free key lime pie is absolutely delicious and a must-eat if you are in Key West and have to eat gluten free! I obviously had no ill effects afterwards, and felt safe with my decision to eat here. Highly recommend!
Key West Key Lime Pie Company
Gluten free key lime pie? No longer, but they do have gluten free key lime pie filling in a cup.
Address: Key Lime Pie Co., 511 Greene St, Key West, FL 33040
The Key West Key Lime Pie Company is your other option for gluten free key lime pie in Key West.
I discovered them by accident, by walking into their location not expecting anything. I was surprised to see a whole section on their menu marked “gluten free”!
The staff here informed me that, unfortunately, their gluten free pie crust supplier went out of business and they haven’t sold gluten free key lime pie ever since then.
However, they do currently offer a gluten free key lime pie filling in a cup. I really appreciate this for a few reasons.
First, the label actually says “gluten free key lime pie,” which shows me they are thinking of the gluten free community in their decision to still offer something gluten free on the menu! Very inclusive.
Second, they take steps to prevent cross contact. The key lime pie filling is made in a separate area of the kitchen from the crusts, and they make the gluten free cups first thing in the morning to further reduce cross contact risks.
Here, they use the simpler egg-less “daughter’s recipe” which I found to be much sweeter and creamier than Kermit’s recipe. Still very yummy though, and I recommend it!
Key Lime Pie Bakery – No Longer Carries Gluten Free Key Lime Pie
Gluten free key lime pie? No, but some outdated reviews claim they do.
Address: Key Lime Pie Co., 511 Greene St, Key West, FL 33040
Key Lime Pie Bakery is another place that came up in my research on where to find gluten free key lime pie in Key West. This place claims to have created the original key lime pie, so I figured after my luck at the Key Lime Pie Co., I might as well check it out.
They do not have gluten free key lime pie here.
I spoke to the manager, who told me that they used to sell gluten free key lime pies, but they discontinued them about three years ago because they just weren’t selling enough and were having to throw pies away. This is why you might find some old reviews claiming to come here for gluten free key lime pie!
Still, I found the staff really friendly. They even pointed me in the direction of the above two places that sell gluten free key lime pie. It might even still be worth coming here, because there are lots of other key lime-related products, like tea and candies, that you might want to check out.

Gluten Free Key West and the Florida Keys: Complete Guide
Gluten Free Key Lime Pie Key Largo
Now, let’s get into where to find gluten free key lime pie on the rest of the Florida Keys! Key Largo is an island much higher up the Florida Keys than Key West. It was actually our first stop of the trip as we drove down from Miami International Airport.
I found one option for gluten free key lime pie in Key Largo which I share about below.
Keys Chocolates and Ice Cream
Gluten free key lime pie? Yes, both pies and frozen pie on a stick.
Address: Keys Chocolates and Ice Cream, 100470 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo, FL 33037
Keys Chocolates and Ice Cream has two locations in the Florida Keys: one on Key Largo and one on Islamorada.
We popped into the one on Key Largo and I was sooo excited to immediately be greeted by a freezer featuring a full gluten free key lime pie! Mission success!
I spoke to the staff here who assured me about cross contact procedures, and directed me to the freezer with chocolate-dipped gluten free key lime pie on a stick. Uhh… yum!
My friend Mary and I shared one stick. I was expecting it to be a kind of frozen ice cream consistency, but instead it was a melt-in-your-mouth deliciously creamy and tangy real key lime pie filling (and gluten free cookie crust!).
Actually, Mary and I kept talking about this every day for the rest of our trip, and probably my biggest regret from the Florida Keys is not going back for seconds! So, do that for me, will you?
Gluten Free Key Lime Pie Islamorada
Islamorada is slightly further down the Florida Keys from Key Largo. For our first couple nights, we stayed at Postcard Inn on Islamorada, which was picture-perfect, beachfront, and even offered free paddle boards and kayaks!
There is one gluten free key lime pie option on Islamorada, which is the other location of Keys Chocolates and Ice Cream.
Keys Chocolates and Ice Cream
Gluten free key lime pie? Yes, both pies and frozen pie on a stick.
Address: Keys Chocolates and Ice Cream, 81933 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada, FL 33036
Keys Chocolates and Ice Cream has a second location on nearby Islamorada.
I did not eat here myself as we went to the Key Largo location. However, I was told they also sell the gluten free key lime pies and the chocolate-dipped frozen gluten free key lime pie on a stick here, too!
Gluten Free Key Lime Pie Marathon FL
Marathon is an island further down the Florida Keys from Islamorada, and about an hour drive short of Key West.
We stayed at Isla Bella Beach Resort on Marathon for our final night in the Florida Keys and it was truly magical – including a surprise celiac-safe gluten free key lime pie that I was not expecting but am now so excited to share with you!
Mahina at Isla Bella Beach Resort
Gluten free key lime pie? Yes.
Address: Mahina at Isla Bella Beach Resort, 1 Knights Key Boulevard, MM 47 Marathon, FL 33050
Reservations required? Yes. Call (786)-638-8106.
Isla Bella is a stunningly beautiful beach-side resort in Marathon. I highly recommend you stay here, if you get the chance. From the complimentary glass of prosecco upon check-in to our balcony views to the wonderful pools, this place was a real treat.
An even bigger treat? I was totally shocked to find that their on-site restaurant, Mahina, offers a celiac-safe gluten free key lime pie!
Mary and I had a lavish dinner here (complete with key lime pie cocktail – but be sure to ask for it without the graham cracker rim!). When the dessert menu was brought out, I said no thank you. I assumed there were no gluten free options because nothing was marked on the menu.
However, our wonderful waitress told me that actually, their key lime pie is made gluten free! I was a bit stunned so asked her to triple check with the chef and she confirmed it was true!
Apparently, they have a celiac waitress here, so they are quite careful about preparing gluten free items in a separate and clean area of the kitchen.
Well, I couldn’t say no then, could I? We ordered the gluten free key lime pie and it was tart, creamy, cold, and so delightful. What a perfect way to end my time in the Florida Keys!
Note: Mahina is open for dinner 6pm-10pm and requires prior reservations. You do not need to be a guest of Isla Bella to eat here (but I recommend staying here if you can!). Note, their menu may change seasonally. I recommend double checking the gluten free key lime pie is in stock when you make your reservation.
Sweet Savannah’s of the Florida Keys – Not Celiac Safe
Gluten free key lime pie? Yes, but not celiac safe.
Address: Sweet Savannah’s of the Florida Keys, 8919 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050
One bonus place that I’ll mention is Sweet Savannah’s of the Florida Keys. This is a dessert shop in Marathon, and they do sell gluten free key lime pie. Actually, they advertise a ton of gluten free options including brownies, cookies, cake pops, and more.
Unfortunately, they do not take steps to prevent cross contact as far as I can tell. I messaged with the owners prior to my visit. They told me “we do have an open kitchen and not a separate area where we prepare our gluten free items.”
I asked some follow up questions, because sometimes open kitchens can be safe if certain steps are taken like preparing gluten free items first thing in the morning with clean gloves and clean pans, etc.
Sadly, I did not get a response and as such decided it wasn’t worth a visit. If you have a gluten intolerance and don’t require avoiding cross contact, then this may be one for you. But unfortunately for us celiacs it doesn’t seem to be an option!
Gluten Free Key Lime Pie in Key West and Beyond: Final Thoughts
Overall, I found four businesses, across six total locations, that sell celiac-safe gluten free key lime pie in Key West and the greater Florida Keys. I would consider that mission completed, wouldn’t you?
(And if anyone else wants a gluten free super-spy for future research missions… hit me up!).
I really hope that this guide is helpful to any of you traveling to the Florida Keys. Be sure to also check out my gluten free Key West guide, which covers more restaurants and hotels that cater to celiacs!
