Organic Basics Silvertech Review: My New Active Travel Essentials

As you’re maybe aware, I’ve slowly been transitioning my wardrobe to include more ethical and sustainable items. The dream is an ethical capsule wardrobe that I can seamlessly take traveling with me. My newest discovery that I have to share with you is the brand Organic Basics. In particular, the Organic Basics silvertech line which has quickly become my new active travel essential (just in time for Everest Base camp next month!).

Why choose Organic Basics Silvertech?

First of all, the entire Organic Basics shop is worth looking into if you are looking for simple and elegant staples. They are a Copenhagen-based company (but ship worldwide!), with a big heart and even bigger goals for reversing the environmental damage caused by the fashion industry. Organic Basics uses only Class A and B fibers such as organic cotton and silver (yes, real silver, I’ll get to that in a minute!). They have extensive efforts to keep their factories in Turkey sustainable and always ethical for the workers. So clearly they are a company I can get behind!

What’s the deal with Organic Basics Silvertech?

But let’s get back to that whole silver thing. Organic Basics silvertech is real cutting edge stuff, which I will argue is incredibly useful for the frequent traveler! Basically, threads of silver are interwoven with the material (in their Active range, this is recycled nylon). No, this isn’t about the bling. The silver actually releases silver ions when it becomes wet (AKA, your sweat). These have antibacterial properties.

In sum, Organic Basics silvertech is anti-odor and keeps your clothes fresh for longer. You can wash them way less often than you otherwise would, making them ideal for the active traveler. But… I was skeptical. So I wore the Silvertech bra and Silvertech leggings for a month, and here are my thoughts!

So… do they live up to the hype?

My first impression upon receiving my Organic Basics silvertech order in the mail was the quality of the fabric. It is thick, but not too thick. Meaning, I have no worries about any see-through mishaps during a downward dog.

I loved the burgundy color (although the set also comes in black), and it was very comfortable and flattering.

First, let’s chat about the bra. I LOVE this bra. Seriously, I am very picky about sports bras. Just a few months ago I tried on 17 sports bras (17!!!) at my local sportswear store… and nixed all of them. So to have ordered a sports bra online and then fallen absolutely in love with it, well I hope that’s testament to how great the Organic Basics silvertech sports bra is!

The leggings, I was a bit worried about to be honest. I do not really like waistbands on my leggings so I was disappointed to find the Organic Basics silvertech leggings do have a waistband. However, after taking them out for test runs (literally, running), I can confirm that the waistband is not irritating! Actually, I feel like the waistband is a natural extension to the rest of the fabric. So yes, I started to fall in love with the leggings too. Plus — they look so good in combination with the sports bra.

How often do I wash my Organic Basics silvertech activewear?

Well, let’s get down to the biggest question you probably have if you’re a traveler. It’s a hassle to wash clothes during travel so any product that claims it lasts longer between washes is worth checking out, to me at least.

However, being activewear (and I do sweat A LOT) I did have my doubts. I can happily assure you, though, after many sniff-tests, the Organic Basics silvertech activewear range really lives up to its claims. Even after going for sweaty runs, interval training, yoga, and more runs, I still could not smell body odor on these clothes. To say I am impressed is an understatement.

I am tending to wash my bra and leggings after 4-6 wears. Mainly because I feel like I should, not because they are smelling or feel dirty. I know that reducing the amount of laundry you do is good for the environment, and one of Organic Basic’s sustainability goals. Maybe in the future I will wash these even less

Do I recommend Organic Basics silvertech for travelers?

YES! I am definitely taking my Organic Basics silvertech activewear on my Everest Base Camp trek. They have been great to train in, and comfy to just travel and lounge in!

Organic Basics also carries a range of other clothes including T-shirts, long sleeves, intimates, accessories, and more.
